First look: Datawind Ubi Slate 7c

This Android tablet comes with a capacitive multi touch input system and a bit bumped internal memory compared to the UbiSlate7+.

When it comes to low cost Android tablets, the market today is flooded with non branded imported products that majorly are from Chinese manufacturers. But Datawind has announced direct war with every low cost tablet makers with the launch of its ultra cheap tablets. Datawind, which has previously announced the Aakash tablet, has now launched two tablets for the Indian market, called the UbiSlate 7+ and the UbiSlate7C both falling in the sub Rs 5,000 range and are aimed at the general masses to adopt.

We also got a chance to get hands on with the UbiSlate7C during its launch that took place in Delhi and here we present to you the first look experience of the same.
The UbiSlate 7C is the advanced version of the UbiSlate 7+ tablet that was launched along with it. The UbiSlate7C in comparison to the UbiSlate7+ features a 7 inch capacitive multi-touch input based display along with a few more gigabytes of memory as well for a price tag of Rs 3,999.

Users can book their tablets after May end this year when this device will be made available for the public.
The UbiSlate7C in terms of look and feel is identical to the UbiSlate7+ with a plain and simple design with an only black colour offering for the device that makes this device look great as well as similar to other tablets in the market.

The rubberised finish given to the device adds fingerprint and smudge protection for the device as well as makes the device easier to grip and handle also which is a big problem with devices with glossy finish that tend to slip off the hands if not handled carefully.
Despite falling in the economical or low cost category, Datawind has managed to provide a capacitive multi touch enabled touchscreen for the device that is very easy and much more fun to use than its resistive touchscreen bearing cousin - the UbiSlate7+.

The screen size of UbiSlate7C is a standard 7 inch that features an 800 x 480 pixel resolution. In terms of colour reproduction and brightness levels, the display is impressive but it lacks colour vibrancy but for the price we have no problems with the device. The low resolution is one of the major constraints as most things look slightly pixilated and dull. But overall the device offers a great bundle for the price and a normal user would not have any problem using the device.
The UbiSlate7C features a similar hardware configuration as the UbiSlate7+ with an 800 MHz processor, integrated display engine running Android version 2.2 frozen yogurt right out of the box. The processor coupled with 256 MB or RAM which is a bare minimum in terms of configuration requirement for the operating system works just fine but users will have to watch out for heavier apps as they won't work on the UbiSlate7C.

Being a low cost tablet, the UbiSlate7C is good for all round tablet works like documents, entertainment and low level gaming as well but a more detailed review for the device will follow soon.
For internet connectivity, the device features connectivity thorough 2.5G cellular connectivity and there is a SIM slot provided where users can use any service provider to provide data support for the UbiSlate7C. Besides, it has WiFi and USB connectivity for easier data access.

Users can connect 3G data dongles for faster internet access as well and Datawind has tied up with Aircel to provide subsidised data cards for buyers with special low cost data plans too.
The device comes with standard 3.5 mm audio connectivity for greater compatibility with other devices but sadly there is no camera on the UbiSlate7C as well so no video conferencing or calling.

We would take a break here and will get you the detailed review of the device that would include detailed testing and performance of the device in the coming few days, so stay tuned.
